Return To School

April 22, 2021

Dear UCS Parents/Guardians,

This is an exciting time of year as we begin to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and staff. While these activities may again look different this year, these traditions are important ways we recognize the hard work and excellence that takes place every day in Utica Community Schools.

As we march to the close of the school year, here are several updates:

Return to In-Person Learning

On Monday, we returned to four days of in-person learning and one day of remote learning. While we continue to closely monitor health indicators, I am pleased with the increased availability of the vaccine. Working closely with our community partners, we have been able to assist all of our staff members seeking access to the vaccine. Also, the vaccine is now available to students who are 16 and older at sites throughout the county.

Given the current high positivity rates in our community, we must follow the health department protocols and quarantine any students or staff members who have been exposed and are not vaccinated. We continue to monitor buildings and take action as necessary.  Health and safety is a priority and we closely follow the Macomb County Return to School guidelines. If placed in quarantine, students can take advantage of the learning opportunities provided by their teachers.

Many families have asked what they can do to support their school during this time. The best thing that we can do is follow the self-screening protocols and safety measures, such as wearing face coverings and frequent handwashing and use of disinfectants. We will continue to provide updates through our dashboard on quarantine and positive cases in our community, county and state. Working together to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, we will reduce the number of students and adults that need to be isolated or placed in quarantine. We greatly appreciate your continued help!

Summer Learning

With summer soon upon us, our staff is preparing learning opportunities for students and families who choose this option. The programs will be available for all K-12 students. Schedules will be shared with families in early May and if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at

 2021-2022 School Year

As we close out this year, we are looking forward to full-time in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year. Secondary student scheduling, class assignments, bond issue construction projects, and ordering curricular materials are all underway.

As we prepare, registration is now available to our families for the following programs:

·       The UCS Virtual Academy will once again be available as part of the portfolio of options for families. The initial application period for the 2021-2022 school year is now open through May 2 at this link.

·       The UCS Bridge to Kindergarten Young Fives program gives families of kindergarten-age students additional time to prepare for a successful kindergarten and school experience. Families who may be interested in this program can complete a short survey prior to April 30.

I will continue to keep you updated in the weeks ahead as we finalize the end of year activities, including graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021. As always, thank you for your support and partnership!
